About The Artisans
Heena's father passed away when she was 11, leaving her, her mother and three younger siblings to support themselves. Heena left school early and learned to embroider from her mother. Even with periodic work from local contractors, the family often did not get paid. A neighbor told them about a new self-help group in their area, started with support from Tara Projects, a member of the World Fair Trade Organization.
Now 20, Heena has been with the group for two years. With good working conditions, Heena receives a living wage and has clean water, medical insurance and a savings plan. She is even able to save money.
In India, goat and dairy value chains are promising enterprises to lift poor communities out of poverty. Through 2023, Heifer will focus on helping small-scale farmers achieve extra processing for greater profits and equip them to find buyers for their products. With our support, farmers will be poised to leverage support and collaborate with other stakeholders in the government and private sector with similar priorities.
